MRI or CT While Travelling in China: Booking, Timing and Reports
Updated 3 October 2026 · By MyChinaCheckup
A non-urgent MRI or CT can be discussed as part of a China trip, but a scan needs more planning than selecting a time on a calendar. The hospital must confirm the examination, any required clinical assessment, preparation and available slot.
Start with the clinical question, then confirm the examination
If a doctor has already recommended imaging, ask how to share the referral and previous reports securely with the proposed hospital. The local clinician may need to assess you and issue an order before the scan. An overseas request helps explain the purpose; it does not automatically establish acceptance or the exact protocol.
If you have no recommendation, request a consultation about suitability. MRI and CT are different examinations, and choosing one because a trip makes it convenient does not establish that it is needed. RadiologyInfo explains CT’s use of X-rays and the importance of weighing the examination’s benefits and risks with a clinician.
Make your request specific enough to quote
- City and dates: say where you can attend and your departure deadline.
- Examination or body region: for example, a brain or knee MRI request for clinical review, rather than an unspecified “full scan”.
- Protocol: confirm whether contrast, additional sequences or another assessment are required.
- Documents: agree English coordination, report translation and image-file delivery separately.
A second body region is an additional request with its own price and time requirements. Do not assume a package includes every scan or that a scan appointment includes a full preventive check-up.
Can the appointment be arranged for tomorrow?
We can check a next-day request in a service city where the hospital has capacity and its clinical team accepts the plan. The final appointment depends on the examination, assessment, preparation and available slot. A message asking for tomorrow is not a booking confirmation, and an available appointment does not mean a report will be ready the same day.
Keep a flexible window if the scan is important to your trip. Avoid buying a new flight solely around an unconfirmed examination. For current service enquiries, use our Medical Diagnostics in China page.
Preparation needs to match the actual scan
Tell the hospital about implants or devices, possible pregnancy, previous contrast reactions and relevant medical conditions through its clinical screening process. Ask for written instructions about food, drink and medicines. Do not apply a routine check-up’s fasting instruction to every MRI or CT.
RadiologyInfo’s MRI preparation guide explains that instructions vary by examination and facility, that implant details need checking, and that some contrast examinations require additional assessment. If sedation is being considered, confirm accompaniment and recovery arrangements with the treating team before planning onward travel.
What should the price include?
Request the cost for the named examination and body region, any doctor consultation, contrast and required preliminary tests. Confirm separate charges for English accompaniment, translation, image copies and further review. A low package headline or another person’s scan price is not an itemised quote for your request.
Agree report delivery before you leave
Ask when the radiologist’s written interpretation is expected, when translation can be delivered and how to obtain the original images. If your overseas doctor needs DICOM files or a specific upload format, communicate that before the hospital visit. The scan time, report time and translated-report time are separate milestones.
