Health Checks in China and Insurance: A Reimbursement Checklist

By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Updated

Insurance reimbursement for a health check in China depends on your own policy and the insurer's assessment. Before paying, ask whether your planned examinations, provider and service charges are eligible. Then agree which documents the hospital and coordinator can supply. An English report or receipt alone does not establish cover, and direct billing needs separate confirmation.

Get an answer about your actual appointment

Send your insurer the proposed hospital, campus, date and examination list. Describe the reason for the appointment accurately: a preventive check-up, a consultation about symptoms, or a test requested by a clinician. Ask them to identify the relevant benefit and any conditions in writing.

A general statement that a policy covers overseas healthcare is not a decision on your booking. Similarly, a hospital's ability to issue documents is separate from the insurer's willingness to pay the claim. Keep those two conversations connected by using the same proposed appointment details.

If an employer manages your benefit, ask whether the employer's process or the insurer's process applies. Do not book on the basis of another traveller's successful claim.

Your selected, confirmed package

Four services included in your package

All listed check-up tests

The examinations and consumables expressly listed for your selected package, with its eligibility conditions.

Personalized VIP coordination

Individual appointment planning, visit coordination and support through report delivery.

Dedicated English-speaking accompaniment throughout your check-up

A dedicated English-speaking companion supports you throughout your hospital check-up visit.

Hospital-issued Chinese report + full English translation

Your hospital’s original Chinese report and complete English translation, delivered within 3–5 working days after the listed package examinations are completed.

These four services are included in the price of your selected, confirmed package. Extra tests, treatment, medicines, transport and accommodation are not included unless expressly listed in your written plan; separately priced additions require your approval.

VIP personal service means MyChinaCheckup’s individual coordination and accompaniment. It does not promise a hospital VIP ward, priority medical access or a medical outcome.

Use this pre-booking question list

  • Does my plan include this type of preventive examination in mainland China?
  • Must I use a particular provider, network or department?
  • Is advance approval or a clinician's referral required?
  • What amount would I pay myself, including any applicable limit or deductible?
  • Are coordination, accompaniment and translation considered separately?
  • Which original documents and translations must I submit?
  • What is the submission deadline, and which channel should I use?

Save the reply and its reference number. If the proposed hospital or examination list changes, ask whether the earlier answer still applies. A reply about one package should not silently become approval for a different appointment.

Separate medical charges from support services

A single price can be convenient for booking while still needing explanation for a claim. Request a clear breakdown showing the medical service and the coordination or language services. Ask which organisation supplies each invoice or receipt and how the payment record connects to the agreed arrangement.

MyChinaCheckup is a coordination platform, not the treating hospital. For confirmed visits through 31 December 2026, the agreed total includes the hospital check-up, coordination and agreed English accompaniment. This inclusion policy does not mean every component is an insured medical expense.

Do not ask a provider to relabel a support fee as a medical procedure. If the insurer needs a document the provider cannot issue, resolve that mismatch before relying on reimbursement.

Agree a document plan with each issuer

As one insurer-specific example, Bupa Global's claims guidance requests treatment information, supporting records and payment evidence. Its invoice guidance includes the patient's name, provider details, and the name, cost and date of individual services. This illustrates documentation detail; it does not establish your coverage or another insurer's requirements.

DocumentPlanning question
Hospital invoice or receiptCan the hospital issue the format your insurer requests?
Detailed examination listDoes it match what was actually performed?
Medical report or consultation noteWho supplies it and when will it be ready?
Support-service invoiceIs the service identified separately and accurately?
Proof of paymentCan you connect it to the service and correct patient?
English translationDoes the insurer require a particular translation format?

Collect the originals even when an English version is available. Confirm whether digital copies are enough or whether you should retain paper documents before leaving the city.

Treat direct billing as its own arrangement

Ask both the insurer and hospital whether direct settlement applies to this specific appointment. Until it is confirmed, plan on the basis of the agreed payment terms rather than assuming that showing an insurance card will settle the bill.

If you pay first, keep the payment confirmation with the final itemised service record. If something is refunded or a test is removed, obtain the corrected accounting documents and use the final amounts in your claim. The MyChinaCheckup cancellation policy governs our booking arrangement; it is separate from your insurance contract.

Check the paperwork while corrections are practical

Before leaving, compare the patient name, service date, provider and examination description across the documents. Ask promptly about a mismatch. Do not edit clinical findings or invoice values yourself.

Create a private folder for each patient with the insurer's instructions, provider documents and payment records. Keep a short list of items still pending and who will obtain them. The clinical report may be delivered after the visit, so agree a reliable handover channel.

For couples or families, do not merge everyone's medical paperwork into a single attachment by default. Submit only what the relevant claim requires, using the insurer's designated process.

Common questions

Does an English report guarantee reimbursement?

No. It may help meet a document requirement, but eligibility and payment remain subject to your policy and the insurer’s assessment. Confirm any translation requirements beforehand.

Can you confirm that my insurer will pay?

We can clarify the proposed service and request available provider documents. Only your insurer can determine your cover and assess the claim; ask them before committing to the visit.

What if the insurer asks for more information later?

Send the precise request to the document issuer or coordinator. We can ask whether the relevant hospital record is available, but cannot create a diagnosis or guarantee a particular document format.

Plan the details before you book

Send your insurer’s document requirements with your proposed city, dates and examination list. We can check which records the provider can supply before you confirm the booking.

An enquiry does not reserve an appointment. Confirm the hospital, date, scope and total in writing before payment.

Questions for a US insurance plan or Medicare

Ask your US insurer to assess the named China provider and proposed examination list. Specify whether the request is preventive screening or clinician-directed investigation; ask about overseas benefits, network restrictions, advance approval and the documents needed for a claim.

Medicare generally does not cover care outside the United States, with limited exceptions. Do not treat a planned China check-up as covered without confirmation. If you have another policy, ask that insurer directly about its terms rather than assuming that emergency travel benefits cover elective screening.

Ask what to do if the hospital does not issue the exact US claim format requested. Keep the authentic provider documents; do not relabel examinations or invent billing codes. Until reimbursement is confirmed, your budget should account for the amount you must pay under the booking terms.
