Senior Health Checks in Shanghai: Companion and Access Planning

By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Updated

Ask the hospital whether a companion can attend and which areas they may enter. For a senior visitor’s Shanghai check-up, plan the practical support in advance rather than assuming that a companion, wheelchair or accessible route will be available on arrival.

Plan support around actual mobility and communication needs

A senior visitor’s booking should identify practical support without assuming the most extensive package is appropriate. Ask the hospital to review clinical suitability separately from the arrangements for transport, walking, seating and a companion.

Make the first enquiry useful without sharing a medical record

State that you are planning for an older visitor, the travel dates, the preferred campus if known and the practical support needed. Ask how a clinician can review relevant records privately before finalising the tests.

Use the previous-results checklist to prepare that discussion and follow-up planning to understand the arrangements if another appointment is recommended.

Explain the assistance needed

Describe concrete needs such as walking distance, steps, standing in queues, hearing instructions or reading forms. Ask who can assist with these needs and whether any equipment or arrangement requires advance booking.

The hospital campus and department matter. A general description of a hospital does not confirm the accessibility of the exact route used for the planned examinations. Ask for the relevant entrance, waiting area and transfer details.

Separate family support and English accompaniment

A family member may help with familiar routines, while an English companion assists with the agreed communication and navigation. Confirm each person’s role and how the patient will make their own decisions.

Ask whether a companion can wait nearby when examination-room access is restricted. Do not assume they may enter every room or receive reports without the patient’s agreement.

Plan preparation and onward travel individually

Ask the clinical team for preparation advice relevant to the patient’s medicines and health. Do not alter medicines or extend fasting simply to fit a shared transport schedule. Bring an up-to-date medicine list and relevant records when the hospital requests them.

Keep the day flexible for rest and unexpected delays. The typical check-up duration is an estimate, not a suitable pace for every person. Confirm report delivery and who will help arrange any clinician follow-up after departure.

Common questions

Are wheelchairs automatically available?

Ask the selected hospital about availability, reservation and the route through the relevant departments. Do not assume availability from a general hospital listing.

Can one person manage the booking for an older relative?

They can make a planning enquiry, but the hospital must confirm the patient’s registration, consent and communication arrangements.

Plan your Shanghai visit

Describe the assistance needed and whether a companion will travel. Ask for a confirmed Shanghai campus and support plan.

An enquiry does not reserve an appointment. Confirm the hospital, campus, date, scope and total in writing before payment.
