Family History and Your Shanghai Health Check: What to Ask

By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Updated

Mention relevant family history when arranging the hospital’s clinical review for a Shanghai check-up. It can help a clinician decide what to discuss; it does not automatically establish that a particular package, scan or blood test is appropriate.

Prepare a short, accurate family-history note for the clinician

For a private clinical discussion, record the condition if known, how the relative is related to you and the approximate age at diagnosis. Distinguish a confirmed diagnosis from something you have only heard described. It is acceptable to say that a detail is unknown.

The clinician decides whether this background changes the appropriate tests or follow-up. Do not treat a family history question on a website as an instruction to buy every available scan. Use the cancer screening questions for that discussion.

Keep the booking request separate from clinical review

The initial enquiry can simply say that you would like the hospital to review your screening needs before selecting a package. Ask for the private channel and whether a separate clinical consultation is needed or charged for.

If you have already undergone related tests, prepare their dates and the actual reports for that private review. See previous tests and avoiding unnecessary repetition; a summary alone may not provide the information the provider needs.

Prepare a factual summary for the clinician

When known, note the affected relative, the condition and the approximate age at diagnosis. Distinguish confirmed diagnoses from uncertain family recollections. If a detail is unknown, say so rather than guessing.

Keep the initial enquiry brief and ask how to share sensitive information privately if the hospital needs it. The coordinator can arrange review and explain package scope, but should not turn a family-history note into a medical recommendation.

Ask what decision a proposed test supports

Ask the clinician whether the proposed screening is appropriate for your age, history and current health, what its limitations are and what would happen after an abnormal result. The National Cancer Institute’s screening overview explains that screening can have benefits and harms, including false results and overdiagnosis.

A large package does not demonstrate that it answers your particular question. If the hospital recommends a consultation or an examination outside the package, request the revised scope and price before proceeding.

Keep previous screening in the picture

Bring relevant earlier reports and dates so the clinician can consider what has already been done. Ask whether any repeat examination would add useful information. A coordinator should not remove or repeat tests solely to match a commercial package label.

Plan how you will receive and discuss the results after leaving Shanghai. Family-history questions often matter beyond one visit, so ask how the new report should be shared with your usual clinician.

Common questions

Should I automatically add a cancer-marker panel?

No. Discuss appropriate screening with a qualified clinician. A requested test should have a clear purpose and its limitations explained.

Can I choose a package before that review?

You can shortlist options, but keep clinical suitability and any required changes unresolved until the hospital confirms them.

Plan your Shanghai visit

Ask for a Shanghai appointment plan that allows the hospital to review your relevant history before finalising the examination scope.

An enquiry does not reserve an appointment. Confirm the hospital, campus, date, scope and total in writing before payment.

The hospital-issued Chinese report and complete English translation are delivered within 3–5 working days after all examinations listed in your confirmed check-up package are completed. Consultations, treatment, pathology and other services outside the listed package follow their separately confirmed arrangements.
