MRI Order Checklist in China: Body Region, Left or Right and Both Sides
Updated 3 October 2026 · MyChinaCheckup editorial review
By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Updated
An MRI booking should identify the exact body region and, where relevant, the left side, right side or both sides. Match your written request with the confirmed booking and hospital order. If something differs, ask the hospital team to clarify it before the scan; a coordinator can assist communication but cannot issue the medical order.
Turn a broad request into a clear question for the hospital
A message saying back and knee MRI leaves questions unanswered. Which part of the back is being discussed? Is the request for one knee or both? Is there an existing doctor's recommendation, or are you asking for a consultation to decide what is needed?
Describe your concern in ordinary language and attach a previous written recommendation when available. Do not try to select technical scan sequences yourself. Ask the hospital to identify the appropriate examination and to confirm how that decision appears in the appointment plan.
Compare three documents, not just one confirmation message
Use the same simple fields across your request, the agreed scope and the hospital order. This makes it easier to notice an unresolved difference.
| Field | What to match |
|---|---|
| Body region | The named region in the request and hospital order |
| Side | Left, right or both, where relevant |
| Clinical request | The reason for the examination and any referring document |
| Scope and price | Each confirmed examination and any separately approved addition |
| Deliverables | Reports, image access and language support agreed for each examination |
This is a communication check, not a substitute for the department's own identity and safety checks. If the clinical team changes the proposed examination, ask for an explanation and a revised scope and cost before consenting.
A visitor’s perspective and your confirmed scan list
Yana’s Shanghai health check-up video story offers a visitor’s first-person view of her hospital experience. For your visit, confirm the exact examination list, language support and report arrangements in your written plan with the hospital and coordination team.
A generic MRI appointment does not establish the number of regions or scans included. Confirm each body region and side in the hospital order, and ask the treating clinician which examinations are appropriate for you.
| Requested region | Side to record | Reconciliation |
|---|---|---|
| Lumbar spine | Named spinal region | Match request, agreed scope and hospital order |
| Knee | Left | Confirm this side appears in the order |
| Knee | Right | Confirm this side is also covered |
Keep safety questions separate from booking preferences
The NHS MRI information describes hospital checks concerning pregnancy, previous surgery, implants or metal, kidney problems and allergies to contrast. It also advises discussing anxiety or claustrophobia before the appointment. Give this information to the clinical team and follow the instructions of the hospital performing your scan.
Ask who will review those answers and whether anything remains unresolved before travel. A preferred date, an accepted enquiry or a coordinator's availability is not confirmation of clinical suitability. Decisions about contrast or other examination details belong to the treating and imaging teams.
Close the loop after the examinations
Before leaving, compare the completed-examination list with the agreed plan. If one examination was deferred, ask why, whether it needs a new appointment, and how the change affects the amount charged.
- Confirm how each report will be identified and delivered.
- Ask separately about access to the original imaging files.
- Check whether English translation and a doctor's explanation are separate services.
- Keep the hospital contact for factual corrections to an order or report.
- Record any outstanding appointment or document and its responsible contact.
Keep original documents alongside translated versions. For wider planning questions, see our medical diagnostics guide.
Common questions
Does knee MRI mean both knees?
Do not assume that it does. Ask for left, right or both knees to be written explicitly in the confirmed scope and checked against the hospital order.
Can my English-speaking coordinator change the scan order?
The coordinator can explain your request, flag a mismatch and help ask questions. The clinical team is responsible for deciding and authorizing the examination; the coordinator does not replace that decision.
What if the booking confirmation and hospital order do not match?
Tell the department before the examination and request clarification. Ask the clinical team to explain whether the difference is intentional and ensure any revised scope or charge is understood before proceeding.
Plan the details before you book
Tell us the requested MRI region, side, travel dates and whether you have a doctor's written request. We can help present these details for hospital confirmation.
An enquiry does not reserve an appointment. Confirm the hospital, date, scope and total in writing before payment.
