Can I Book a China Health Check Without WeChat or a Chinese Number?

By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Updated

It may be possible, but the answer depends on the hospital's booking channel. Do not assume that every health check requires WeChat or a mainland Chinese number. Ask whether the hospital can register a passport holder through its official telephone or service desk, and confirm separately how you will receive appointment updates and reports.

Identify the exact step that is blocked

Booking, identity verification, payment and report collection are different tasks. Being unable to receive a code in one app does not establish that the hospital cannot see foreign patients. Describe the failure precisely: the form rejects your number, the code never arrives, your passport type is missing, or the name fields do not match your document.

Shanghai's official hospital guide describes both hotline and online appointments, passport-based registration at the hospital, and SMS verification within its illustrated Suishenban booking route. That is evidence of different access steps, not a universal statement that every hospital accepts overseas numbers or requires a Chinese SIM.

Ask the hospital for an alternative route

Start with the official contact listed by the hospital or the relevant department. Explain that you are an overseas visitor seeking an optional health check, state your city and dates, and ask whether staff can help with passport registration. Specify that you do not yet have WeChat or a mainland number, rather than expecting the team to infer the problem.

  • Is there an official telephone, email or service-desk booking route for this package?
  • Can registration be completed using my passport details?
  • Does any step still require a working local SMS number?
  • How will I receive the final appointment confirmation?

A request sent through an alternative channel still needs a confirmed appointment.

Keep the patient identity consistent

Ask staff how to enter your name, including spaces, multiple surnames or middle names, so it matches your passport. If you already have a hospital patient number, provide that rather than creating a second record without checking. Confirm the original identification you must bring on the day.

If a coordinator is permitted to supply a contact number, distinguish that communication field from your patient identity. Do not use another person's patient profile to get around a registration problem. Ask who will receive confirmation messages, appointment changes and report notifications, and agree how those messages will reach you promptly.

Plan for report access before leaving China

A booking that works while you are in China may still leave a report-access problem after departure. Before payment, ask whether the final report requires an app login, a new SMS code, an in-person collection or another delivery method. Confirm whether the same process covers the English version and any medical images you request.

Keep your hospital patient number and the official report-access instructions. Test the agreed contact method while you are still available to resolve a problem. If someone will collect or receive records for you, ask what permission the hospital requires and how that person will pass them to you privately.

Separate payment access from booking access

A hospital's accepted payment method should be checked independently of its appointment app. Ask the actual provider or coordinator which payment route applies to your written quote. Having an app account does not confirm that a particular linked card or payment will work; a screenshot of a package also does not reserve its appointment.

For MyChinaCheckup arrangements, review the written plan and total, then arrange the hospital booking and written confirmation. Ordinary check-ups can be paid in full after arrival in China, before the first examination begins. Any hospital-required advance payment is disclosed separately in writing and agreed before you accept the plan and proceed with booking. Explain any digital-access limitation in the initial enquiry so it can be included in the plan. If you are seeking a visa or residence-permit examination, use the separate designated-centre route; an optional hospital check-up is a different service.

Common questions

Should I buy a Chinese SIM card before choosing a hospital?

First ask which step requires it and whether an official alternative exists. The answer may depend on the particular app and department. Also consider how you will access messages after leaving China.

Can my friend book using their own hospital account?

Ask the hospital about an approved booking-on-behalf process. Your own patient identity must be recorded correctly; booking under a friend's patient profile can create mismatched records.

Can MyChinaCheckup arrange everything without WeChat?

Tell us your available communication methods and the hospital you are considering. We can check the actual booking and report-delivery requirements, but cannot promise every provider supports the same alternatives.

Plan the details before you book

Tell us your preferred hospital or city, your travel dates, and whether you can use WeChat or receive Chinese SMS messages. We can check a workable booking and report-delivery route.

An enquiry does not reserve an appointment. Confirm the hospital, date, scope and total in writing before payment.

The hospital-issued Chinese report and complete English translation are delivered within 3–5 working days after all examinations listed in your confirmed check-up package are completed. Consultations, treatment, pathology and other services outside the listed package follow their separately confirmed arrangements.
