MRI in China with an Implant: Device Documents to Prepare
By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Published
Tell the MRI team about an implant or medical device before the appointment is finalised. Provide the available implant card and device details for review by the selected hospital’s radiology team. A previous MRI, a broad description such as “metal plate”, or a coordinator’s confirmation cannot establish that a new scan is safe.
Make device review a booking step
The FDA advises patients to report implanted devices and bring an implant card when available. Some devices are labelled MR Safe or MR Conditional; any conditions must be checked by the medical team for the proposed examination. The label is not permission for a traveller to assess their own scan. FDA: what patients should know before MRI.
Put the device question into the first planning conversation, alongside the requested body region and clinical order. This gives the hospital an opportunity to identify missing records before you arrive. MyChinaCheckup can help relay questions and organise documents, but does not approve implant compatibility or choose the scanning protocol.
Prepare a device identification packet
| Information available | What to provide or ask for | If it is missing |
|---|---|---|
| Implant or device card | A legible copy, with both sides where information is printed | Ask the implanting provider how to obtain identification |
| Manufacturer and exact model | Retain the original spelling and model details | Do not substitute a general device category |
| Implant location and procedure date | Relevant operation record or device documentation | Explain which details remain uncertain |
| Multiple devices or components | Identify each item rather than listing only the best-known one | Ask the MRI team what else it needs |
| Previous MRI records | Date, provider and any available device-related scan documentation | Present as background, not current clearance |
The MRI team may request more or different information depending on the device. Keep the original documents with any translation so that numbers, product names and restrictions can be checked against the source. Do not rewrite unclear model numbers from memory.
If the card is lost, identify the unresolved question
Ask the hospital or clinician that implanted the device whether it can supply a copy or an appropriate record. Tell the receiving MRI department exactly what you have and what you could not obtain. Ask whether it can assess those documents or needs additional information. There is no guarantee that incomplete records can be resolved during a short visit.
If review remains pending, keep that status visible in your itinerary and avoid treating the scan as confirmed. Ask the clinical team what next step is appropriate. An alternative examination, if considered, is a medical decision rather than an automatic substitution selected by the booking team.
Separate a requested slot from an accepted scan
Use three distinct status lines: documents received; radiology review complete or further information requested; appointment and final preparation confirmed. A message that only addresses the first line should not be read as approval of the other two. Ask who will tell you when each stage is complete.
When the hospital accepts the plan, retain the exact campus and department, the examination description and any specific attendance instructions. Tell the team if your device situation or relevant history changes after the review. You should still answer the hospital’s screening questions on the day.
The MRI order checklist addresses another part of the booking: body region, side and the clinician’s imaging request. Device review and examination scope both need to be clear.
Bring the documents again on the day
Carry the device information and the accepted appointment details in an accessible format. Ask where to present them before entering the scanning area. Tell staff about other medical or electronic devices, patches or possible metal foreign bodies when completing their screening; do not assume one accepted implant record covers every screening question.
If you also have a concern about the scanner space or keeping still, flag it separately using our MRI comfort and communication checklist. Resolving a comfort request does not resolve a device-safety question, and the reverse is also true.
What to include in an MRI planning enquiry
Give your city and dates, the requested examination, whether you have an implant card or relevant operation record, and the special requirements you want the hospital to assess. We can explain how to provide the supporting documents and seek a response from the selected team.
Ask for the accepted scan scope, any required consultation, support, document delivery and complete price in writing. If safety review is not yet complete, record that condition before making travel or payment commitments. Catalogue MRI descriptions are not individual safety clearance.
Ask us to check your plan
Share your city, dates, concerns and special requirements. We will clarify what the selected provider can confirm before you accept a booking.
An enquiry does not reserve an appointment. Clinical decisions, preparation and treatment are provided by the selected healthcare provider.
