MRI in China with Claustrophobia: Questions Before Booking
By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Published
If enclosed spaces or a previous difficult MRI worry you, say so before choosing the appointment. Ask the selected radiology team about the actual scanner and positioning for your examination, how you can communicate during it, and which support options it can assess. Open or wider-bore equipment and sedation are not assumed services.
Describe what made a previous scan difficult
“I am nervous about MRI” is a useful start; a short description helps the team ask more specific questions. Was the difficulty entering the scanner, the position, the space around your head, noise, pain while lying still, or uncertainty about stopping? If you stopped a previous examination, say which part you could not complete and whether any records are available.
These details help the clinical team plan a conversation; they do not determine the scanner or treatment by themselves. You can also explain communication needs, hearing difficulties or a preference for advance explanation. Do not wait until arrival to raise a concern that may affect the appointment.
Ask about the equipment for your exact examination
RadiologyInfo explains that scanner designs differ, that some have a wider opening, and that open MRI is not suitable for every examination. The radiologist must consider the requested images as well as comfort. This general guidance does not identify equipment available at a particular Chinese hospital. RadiologyInfo: preparing for MRI.
| Question | Answer needed from the team | Avoid assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Which scanner will be used? | The actual planned unit or confirmed design at the selected campus | A hospital website image shows your scanner |
| How will I be positioned? | What the proposed body-region examination involves | Every scan is head-first or uses the same position |
| What will be placed around the scanned area? | Explanation of the required equipment and positioning | A larger scanner removes every source of discomfort |
| How can I ask for help? | Communication method and the team’s instructions | A travelling companion can always enter |
| What happens if I cannot continue? | Who reassesses and how the unfinished visit is handled | An alternative scan can immediately replace it |
Agree how instructions will reach you
Ask for the explanation before the scan in a language you understand, including how staff will signal instructions and how you can alert them. RadiologyInfo describes intercom communication during MRI. Confirm the arrangement for your appointment and tell the team if you may have difficulty hearing or following spoken instructions.
Dedicated English accompaniment during a coordinated visit does not mean the coordinator is automatically admitted to the scanner room. Access and MRI safety screening are controlled by the hospital. If a companion’s presence would help, ask whether it is permitted and how that person would be screened. Have the answer before relying on it.
Ask the clinician about support, including any sedation question
If you want to discuss medication or sedation, raise it before the booking is finalised. The clinical team decides whether an option is appropriate and available, and supplies preparation, supervision and discharge instructions. Do not arrange your own dose or assume an ordinary MRI slot includes assessment, sedation and recovery.
Ask whether an additional consultation, different appointment length or separate facility is required. If sedation is proposed, discuss the accompanying adult and transport arrangements with the provider. RadiologyInfo advises against driving after sedative medication; follow the selected clinical team’s complete instructions rather than relying on a general article.
Write down what remains conditional
A useful confirmation distinguishes the planned scanner, agreed communication support, any outstanding clinical assessment and the appointment status. If a preferred option cannot be confirmed, ask the team what alternatives can be evaluated before you decide whether to proceed. Do not accept an unverified “wide-bore available” message without linking it to your body region, campus and date.
Ask how the price and change terms apply if the plan needs to change or the examination cannot be completed. No completion guarantee follows from buying a package. The MRI service page covers scope and quotes, while implant documentation is a separate safety-planning issue.
Send your request before selecting the slot
Include your city, dates, body region if known, relevant previous experience and the specific support you want to discuss. We can seek an answer from the selected provider and put its confirmed arrangements into the written plan. Your concern is a legitimate planning detail; the appointment should reflect it rather than leave it as an informal note.
Ask us to check your plan
Share your city, dates, concerns and special requirements. We will clarify what the selected provider can confirm before you accept a booking.
An enquiry does not reserve an appointment. Clinical decisions, preparation and treatment are provided by the selected healthcare provider.
