Transcranial Doppler in Guangzhou Packages: What Does the Brain Examination Cover?

By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Published

Four of the 42 Guangzhou package tables reviewed on 13 October 2026 explicitly name transcranial Doppler, or TCD: Nanfang Women 02 and Women 03, and Guangzhou Medical University First Affiliated Hospital Men 03 and Women 03. A TCD row describes a particular examination. It should not be expanded into an unspecified “full brain check” or treated as confirmation of brain MRI, MRA or carotid ultrasound.

This guide matches those catalogue entries to the examination names a visitor may already have on a clinician’s request. It compares published scope, not whether an individual should undergo screening or which package is medically preferable.

What TCD measures

MedlinePlus describes transcranial Doppler ultrasound as an examination of blood flow to and within the brain using sound waves. Its subject is blood flow. A general request to “check my brain” still needs a clinician to establish the clinical question and an appropriate examination.

Several terms can occur in a discussion of the head or circulation, but their targets and techniques differ:

Examination name Basic scope What the name does not establish in a package
Transcranial Doppler, TCD Ultrasound assessment of blood flow to and within the brain A brain MRI, MRA or separate neck-vessel examination
Carotid ultrasound Ultrasound examination of the neck’s carotid arteries, including blood-flow assessment A separately listed TCD examination
Brain MRI Magnetic-resonance images of brain structures A specifically requested MRA protocol
MRA Magnetic-resonance examination of blood vessels A defined body region or inclusion in a package that only names another examination
Head or brain CT X-ray-based cross-sectional imaging of the head TCD or an MRI examination

The definitions come from MedlinePlus and RadiologyInfo’s explanations of carotid ultrasound, brain MRI, MRA and head CT. They explain terminology; they do not establish the detailed protocol or clinical suitability of a Guangzhou catalogue item.

The four explicitly named TCD entries

The table retains the wording of MyChinaCheckup’s operator catalogue. It is not an independently confirmed hospital order. Row numbers below belong to the displayed bilingual lists, where present.

Package source Published TCD wording Published scope note
Nanfang Women 02 Transcranial Doppler ultrasound Listed as an individual item or assessment.
Nanfang Women 03 Transcranial Doppler ultrasound Listed as an individual item or assessment.
Guangzhou Medical University First Affiliated Hospital Men 03 23. Transcranial Doppler (TCD); 颅内多普勒TCD Included in this package.
Guangzhou Medical University First Affiliated Hospital Women 03 22. Transcranial Doppler (TCD); 颅内多普勒TCD Included in this package.

The remaining reviewed tables did not explicitly name TCD. That is a finding about the published wording, not proof that those hospitals cannot perform it or a conclusion that it is excluded from every possible arrangement. No claim about citywide availability follows from this catalogue review.

Read neighbouring vessel rows separately

Nanfang Women 03 lists both “Transcranial Doppler ultrasound” and “Ultrasound: carotid arteries.” They are separate entries. Women 02 explicitly names TCD but has no row explicitly naming carotid ultrasound. Nanfang Men 02 and Women 01 name carotid ultrasound without explicitly naming TCD. These differences disappear if every vessel-related row is grouped under “brain circulation.”

Guangzhou Medical University First Affiliated Hospital Men 03 also has two relevant entries. Alongside its TCD row, row 17 names “Bilateral neck-vessel colour Doppler ultrasound, including carotid arteries and internal jugular veins,” with the Chinese wording 双侧颈血管彩超(包括颈动脉、颈内静脉). Preserve that stated anatomy. Women 03 explicitly names TCD but does not explicitly name the same neck-vessel study. The similar tier number does not make the two lists interchangeable.

A further wording limit appears in Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital’s Pazhou Men 03 and Women 03 lists. Each names “Carotid haemodynamic assessment” (颈动脉血流动力学检测), with an express requirement to confirm the examination and method in writing. Neither that wording nor the separate carotid-and-vertebral ultrasound row should be relabelled TCD.

Clifford Men 02, Men 03, Women 02 and Women 03 name “Cerebrovascular haemodynamic assessment” (脑血管血流动力学检测). These are individual included entries under a cerebrovascular-assessment heading. Neither the row nor that heading explicitly identifies the technique as TCD. Keep the published inclusion and the unresolved method as separate facts, and ask the provider to clarify the examination.

Reconcile a clinician’s request with the catalogue

Keep the original examination name when asking the receiving provider to review a referral. If the request says brain MRI or MRA, a package’s TCD entry does not confirm that request. If the request says TCD, a generic “Doppler” or “vascular assessment” label leaves the target unresolved.

A short reconciliation record can keep the enquiry precise:

Scroll horizontally to see all columns.

Field What to record
Original request Exact examination name, anatomical target and clinical question supplied by the clinician
Catalogue match Package URL, exact row and any published condition
Wording gap Any change of technique, anatomical target or unspecified assessment
Provider response Exact accepted examination; any clinical review or order needed first
Confirmed arrangement Campus, appointment, included scope or separately agreed charge, and report arrangements

If wording differs, ask the clinical team to resolve it before paying for an assumed substitute. The coordinator can relay the request and clarify the quotation; the clinician chooses the appropriate examination and interprets the findings. A package label or a normal screening result should not be used to settle new symptoms.

For an MRI/MRA request, continue with the brain-imaging planning guide. For a planned local scan, see Guangzhou MRI appointment questions. The Guangzhou check-up page provides the broader package route. This comparison is not a recommendation to add TCD or combine all the examinations shown above.

Source method: all 42 current HTML package tables across the seven Guangzhou hospital listings were reviewed, with their headings and scope notes. The findings describe MyChinaCheckup’s published catalogue on 13 October 2026. The receiving provider must confirm individual suitability, the accepted examination and availability.
