DXA or Ultrasound Bone Density? Check the Exact Examination Before Booking
By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Published
A visitor’s doctor has asked about bone-density testing, while a China package lists a general bone-density item. Before booking, the visitor needs to know whether the listed method and measurement sites answer the doctor’s request. Similar names do not establish equivalent examinations.
A composite planning example based on anonymised enquiry themes, not a record of a completed visit or a promised outcome. The provider must confirm each arrangement.
Keep the requested method beside the package wording
Ask the referring clinician whether the request is for DXA, also often written DEXA, and which sites should be measured. Then ask the proposed hospital to name the method actually supplied. A broad bone-density label should not be assumed to mean central DXA, nor should an ultrasound measurement silently replace a specifically requested DXA examination.
The International Society for Clinical Densitometry’s official positions distinguish central DXA from quantitative ultrasound and their clinical uses. They state that quantitative ultrasound is not used to monitor the skeletal effects of osteoporosis treatment. This does not make every ultrasound result useless; it means the purpose and method must be matched by the clinician.
Confirm the purpose as well as the body site
Explain whether the request concerns an initial assessment, a previous result or monitoring under a clinician’s care. Supply the earlier report if requested, including its date, method, instrument details and measured sites. Do not compare two isolated scores yourself and conclude that bone density improved or worsened.
If a previous study was performed elsewhere, ask the receiving clinician how a valid comparison can be made. A new facility or method can affect comparability. The useful booking question is whether the proposed examination provides what the reviewing doctor needs, not whether two products both use the words bone density.
Find out where the accepted examination would take place
Ask whether the specific test is in the chosen package or requires a separate order, department or appointment. Request the named campus and the process for clinical review. A hospital appearing in the check-up directory does not confirm that the required equipment, appointment or protocol is available to this visitor.
If the package item is different, ask whether the requested examination can be separately arranged, whether the existing item should remain, and how any change would be priced. Do not assume a free substitution or a refund for an unused package component. Keep the request pending until the provider confirms the accepted method and scope.
Request a report that preserves what was measured
Ask for the original report with examination date, measurement sites, method and relevant instrument information, plus the agreed English translation. Confirm whether any scan printouts or other records are available and whether they are included or separately charged. The clinician should explain the findings using the appropriate clinical context.
Keep originals and translations together. If a report is missing a requested site or appears to describe another method, ask the issuing provider to clarify it rather than editing the document or assuming equivalence.
Accept a complete answer rather than a test-name match
Before paying, the visitor should have an accepted method and sites, clinical purpose, provider and campus, appointment status, preparation instructions, price and record-delivery plan. Use a separate line for any consultation needed to interpret the result.
The standard confirmed package includes its listed tests, personal coordination, English accompaniment during the check-up and Chinese report with English translation. A separately arranged DXA or additional review needs its own written scope. There is no universal bone-density price or promise of availability across the site’s hospitals.
