Breast Imaging in China: Mammography, Ultrasound or MRI?

By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Updated

Compare the examination names, clinical purpose, previous images, quote and follow-up before arranging breast imaging.

Name the question before naming the scan

When asking about breast imaging, say whether you are discussing routine screening, a new concern, an earlier report or a clinician’s existing recommendation. These are different booking situations. If a report already recommends follow-up, share its wording with the receiving clinical team rather than translating it into a self-selected scan.

A package may list breast ultrasound while your question concerns mammography or MRI. Ask for the exact current specification and a separate assessment of suitability. An ultrasound entry does not establish that another modality is included or available at that location.

Keep the three examination names distinct

Name on the planWhat to clarify
MammographyIs this a screening or diagnostic appointment, and what previous images does the team need?
Breast ultrasoundWhat clinical question is being assessed, and what report or image files will be provided?
Breast MRIWhy is MRI proposed, what protocol is intended, and what preparation or safety review is required?

The National Cancer Institute describes mammography as a principal breast-screening method and discusses MRI in selected risk settings. ACR/RSNA patient guidance describes breast MRI as a supplement to other assessment, not a universal replacement for mammography or ultrasound. The treating team should choose the investigation for the clinical question.

Prepare previous reports and usable images

Bring the original report, the date and location of the examination, and any image access instructions you have. Ask whether the receiving radiology department can review the actual images before deciding on another examination. A photograph of a report may help explain the request but is not the same as the original image study.

If your documents use a term you do not understand, keep the original wording visible in the translation. Ask who will explain the result and whether that consultation should happen after imaging. Do not assume a short radiology summary includes a full specialist review.

Confirm the proposed MRI protocol and preparation

If MRI is proposed, ask whether contrast is planned and what screening is needed for that exact examination. Raise implants, previous contrast reactions, pregnancy possibility, breastfeeding and concerns about tolerating the scan with the clinical team. Follow its specific instructions; do not change medicines simply to fit an assumed scan timetable. NHS MRI guidance explains why advance discussion and individual preparation matter.

Request a female operator or chaperone separately from a female reviewing doctor. Staffing and examination arrangements need explicit confirmation. Ask what support is available during preparation and consent, including how you can ask for a pause or further explanation.

Make the quote and follow-up legible

Ask the written plan to name the modality, anatomical scope, hospital and campus, consultation, contrast if applicable, report language and image-delivery arrangement. Separate confirmed items from options still awaiting clinical review. This prevents a generic “breast check” price being mistaken for the total cost of a different pathway.

For a short stay, confirm when the final report is expected and when a clinician can review it. If those dates do not fit your visit, ask about an appropriate follow-up arrangement before paying. Use the short-visit planning guide to build a sequence around the actual availability.

Plan a visit around your priorities

Tell us your preferred city, travel dates, main questions and special requirements. We can check the appropriate appointment route, current scope and itemised quote with the hospital.

An enquiry does not reserve an appointment. Confirm the hospital, dates, scope and total in writing before payment.
