Periods, Hormones and Fertility Questions: Planning a Consultation in China

By MyChinaCheckup coordination team · Updated

Organise period, hormone, fertility and sexual-health questions into a clinical brief before choosing tests or a package.

Describe what you need help with

Start with the question you want answered: a change in periods, an ongoing concern while using treatment, pregnancy planning, a previous hormone result or advice about contraception or sexual health. Explain the timeline and relevant medicines to the clinical team. You do not need to arrive with a self-selected laboratory panel.

For a visit covering several concerns, ask which clinician should lead the assessment. Gynaecology, endocrinology and fertility services are not interchangeable booking labels. The hospital should confirm the appropriate department and whether an additional appointment would be useful.

A hormone panel needs a purpose and instructions

Ask what each proposed test is intended to help decide and whether an existing result can be reviewed first. If the team requests blood tests, obtain its instructions on appointment timing, preparation and medicines. Do not stop hormonal treatment or other prescribed medicine to make a result seem easier to interpret.

Ask how the laboratory result will be linked to a consultation. MedlinePlus explains that reference ranges, methods and units can differ and that results need clinical context. Keep the original report rather than sending only numbers copied into a message.

Keep fertility planning separate from a general check-up

Tell the hospital whether your goal is preconception advice, review of previous fertility investigations or a question about an existing treatment plan. Ask the proposed clinician what records are necessary and what can reasonably be discussed during the available appointment.

A general women’s package or pelvic ultrasound is not a complete fertility assessment. Confirm the actual consultation and examination scope before using a package name to compare costs. If more than one person may need assessment, keep each person’s records, consent and booking details separate.

Separate symptoms, cervical screening and infection questions

Routine cervical screening is not a substitute for assessment of unusual bleeding. NHS guidance advises seeking assessment for bleeding between periods or after sex. Tell the clinical team what is happening before deciding whether a routine package is the right starting point.

If your question concerns an infection, contraception or sexual health, ask for a private clinical discussion and the exact proposed scope. Do not assume that “women’s blood tests,” HPV testing and a general infection screen mean the same thing. Confirm which results will be issued and who will explain any next steps.

A complex endocrine question needs more than a thyroid package

If you already have an endocrine diagnosis, several hormone results or an unresolved question about ongoing treatment, describe the decision you need reviewed and provide the relevant records. Ask whether an endocrinology consultation or another specialist is the appropriate starting point. A package containing thyroid blood tests or ultrasound does not by itself constitute a specialist second opinion.

Confirm the clinician’s review scope, the records needed, whether tests should wait until after the consultation and who will interpret any new results. Keep preparation and medicine changes with the responsible clinical team. A longer hormone list is not evidence that a package answers a complex endocrine question.

Arrange the appointment around real constraints

Share fixed travel dates and ask whether the first consultation can occur before any timed examinations. Confirm the date of each appointment separately. If a requested test cannot be completed within your stay, ask what useful consultation or records review can still take place and what would need follow-up elsewhere.

State language, female-clinician, chaperone and private-report preferences in the enquiry. Make sure the final quote distinguishes the consultation, routine package and optional laboratory items. Our existing-results guide explains how to prepare the documents; the preparation guide helps organise the hospital’s instructions.

Plan a visit around your priorities

Tell us your preferred city, travel dates, main questions and special requirements. We can check the appropriate appointment route, current scope and itemised quote with the hospital.

An enquiry does not reserve an appointment. Confirm the hospital, dates, scope and total in writing before payment.
