“Met Bella”: From Enquiry to a Guangzhou Hospital Visit

At 08:32, a short message appeared in the coordination group: “Met Bella.” For Mr A., it confirmed that he had found his English-speaking companion at Clifford Hospital. A few days earlier, he had been asking online how to arrange a check-up. Now he had chosen a plan, agreed a time and met the person waiting for him.

At first, he knew he wanted a general health check

Mr A. submitted an enquiry through the MyChinaCheckup website on 27 October. He wanted to arrange a general health check in Guangzhou but had not yet chosen a package.

That day, we sent the first email, using Clifford Hospital’s men’s Advanced 02 package as a starting point for discussion. We outlined its main examination areas and asked about his time in China and the matters he most wanted to understand. A request for a comprehensive check-up was a reason to clarify his priorities, rather than automatically add every available test.

“Let me choose.”

The conversation continued on WhatsApp. His questions became more specific: were liver and kidney function tests included? What could be considered beyond the standard package? How did the options differ? He also mentioned a friend’s check-up and wanted to understand why the plans were priced differently.

We explained the examination scope of the different options and that anything outside a package needed separate confirmation. After reviewing a basic option, he asked for the information for men’s 02 and 03: “Let me choose.” He ultimately selected men’s 03.

Our role was to make the choices clear enough for him to decide.

An early appointment, with the preparation worked through

Mr A. hoped to have his check-up early to leave time for obtaining reports later, and asked whether the following day might be possible. He said that he had already eaten breakfast that day and understood that the fasting glucose test required fasting.

Once the plan was agreed, we collected the information needed for hospital registration and created a coordination group with Mr A., Steven and English-speaking companion Bella. The preparation conversation covered fasting, the identification required by the hospital, and following on-site instructions for ultrasound and sample collection.

He also asked how to manage his usual medicines. We checked with the hospital and relayed its response for his individual circumstances: he could take his usual morning medicines, using only a small cup of water to swallow them. He therefore had an answer from the hospital instead of having to guess whether to change his medication routine.

Individual hospital guidance: this was the hospital’s response for Mr A. and his planned examinations. It is not general medication advice for other visitors. Ask your own clinical team about your medicines, water intake and the preparation for your particular tests.

From “Building 2” to the south-gate security point

The agreed meeting time was 08:30 at the entrance to Building 2 at Clifford Hospital. Bella subsequently made the location more precise by identifying the south gate.

On the morning of the visit, Mr A. updated the group as he set off. At 08:21, Bella told him she was waiting by the security checkpoint at the entrance. After they confirmed the location, his 08:32 message arrived: “Met Bella.”

For someone familiar with the hospital, it was simply an entrance. For a visitor arriving there for the first time, knowing where to go and who was waiting removed some of the uncertainty.

A relaxed moment at the hospital

The photograph records a relaxed moment with Mr A. and Bella at the hospital. Mr A.’s warm, easy-going presence made this shared moment feel relaxed and welcoming. The detailed online conversation and the English-speaking support on site came together here.

The details also include things beyond the examinations

Later that day, Mr A. asked for a receipt rather than the payment document he had received earlier. We prepared the corresponding document.

Package comparison, preparation, a precise meeting point and the documents requested afterwards may each seem like small tasks. Following through on them helps turn a check-up in another language into an arrangement a visitor can understand and navigate.

Make health easier to understand, and put care into every step.
